Box Score High Point made a furious comeback and rallied for seven runs in its final at-bat, but couldn't finish the job and fell 14-10 to Appalachian State Wednesday night in Thomasville.
The game was played at historic Finch Field, home of the Thomasville Hi-Toms of the Coastal Plain League.
HPU dropped its eighth-consecutive contest and fell to 7-18, while the Mountaineers won their second game in as many days and improved to 6-14.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the second, the Panthers rallied to tie the score. Matt Gorman drew a lead-off walk, and Brett Maloley and Brent Myers were hit by pitches to load the bases. After Gorman scored on a fielders' choice by Anthony Bell, Maloley and Bell came home on a double by Rey Rojas.
The Mountaineers exploded for six runs in the top of the third to take a 9-3 advantage. Tim Johnson homered to left off HPU starter John Wanger (0-4), and Travis Hunnicutt's double to center scored Brad Peisel, Clint Johns, and Justin Thomas for the biggest blows.
ASU added two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the seventh to build a seemingly-insurmountable 14-3 lead. But the Panthers stormed back in the bottom of the ninth for seven runs (aided by four Mountaineer errors in the frame) to make things interesting.
Bell led off the inning with a single, Matt Christie walked, and Kemp Smith's one-out double scored Bell. Ken Keesee then reached on the first of four ASU fielding errors of the inning, which scored Christie. Nick Thompson then reached when ASU leftfielder Hunnicutt dropped a pop fly, scoring Smith.
Trailing 14-6, pinch-hitter Chris Draska scored Keesee on a fielders' choice. Thompson then scored on a balk by ASU's Dusty Blake. Myers reached on a throwing error and Draska scored to make it 14-8.
After a walk to pinch-hitter Matt Richardson, Andrew Kline relieved Blake on the mound. Kline allowed a walk to Christie which loaded the bases, and Rojas reached when third baseman Peisel dropped a pop-up, scoring Myers and pulling the Panthers within 14-10.
But Kline got Smith, who represented the tying run, to ground into a fielders' choice to end a wacky evening. The Panthers sent 13 men to the plate in the final inning and left the bases loaded.
The teams combined for 10 errors.
HPU hosts Brown this weekend in a four-game series, which begins Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm at Erath Field.
