In by far its best offensive performance of the season, High Point pounded out 15 runs and downed Conference USA member Charlotte 15-9 Sunday at Tom and Lib Phillips Field.
The Panthers, who scored 12 runs in the eighth to take control, improve to 3-6, while the 49ers drop to 3-3.
Charlotte took an early 1-0 lead when George Sandel, who led off the
inning with a triple to right center field, scored on Brad Lamm's sacrifice fly to right field in the first inning.
High Point knotted the score at 1-1, when Kemp Smith scored on Jayson
Hoffman's sacrifice fly to left field in the fourth inning, and took a 2-1 lead when Colin Cronin scored on Brett Maloley's fielder's choice in the fifth inning.
The 49ers tied the score when Brad Erwin connected on his first home
run of the season over the right field wall leading off the fifth inning. Charlotte then exploded for five runs on two hits in the seventh inning to take a 7-2 lead. The big blow of the inning was Brian Scafe's three-run home run over the left center field wall.
But the Panthers countered in a big way by erupting for 12 runs on four hits with four Charlotte errors in the eighth inning to take a 14-7 lead. The big hit of the inning was Chris Draska's grand slam over the left center field wall.
High Point added a run on a solo home run by Rey Rojas in the ninth
inning. Then, Charlotte made the final score 15-9 with two runs in the ninth inning. Adam Floyd and Thomas Bowker scored in the inning.
The series concludes on Tuesday at 5 pm in Charlotte.
