Grant Rembert and Bill Carley combined to drive in seven runs as UNC Asheville completed a three-game Big South Conference sweep of High Point, 13-3 at Greenwood Field in Asheville Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs won their fifth straight game to improve to 10-10 on the year and remain perfect in Big South play at 3-0, while the Panthers dropped to 7-16 overall and 0-5 in the league.
Asheville had 15 hits in the game as the Bulldogs slugged three homers and had three doubles. UNCA scored in every inning but the fifth. Rembert went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, while Carley went 3-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs.
The win went to Bulldog starter Steven Cook (3-2). Cook overcame a shaky start to pitch eight strong innings. He allowed eight hits, struck out five and walked two.
Toby Hoskins (1-1) took the loss for HPU.
The Panthers scored twice in the first inning to grab a quick 2-0 lead before the Bulldogs answered back with eight straight runs. Steve Burnich hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to put UNCA in front for good at 3-2.
In the third, Rembert hit a two-run homer to push the lead to 5-2. He doubled in two more runs to help put the Bulldogs in front, 8-2.
Kemp Smith hit a long home run in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-3. Smith finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double. Matt Gorman and Matt Christie also had two hits for the Panthers.
Steve Sherman drove in a run in the sixth to pad the lead to 9-3. In the seventh, Carley hit his first home run of the season to increase the margin to 10-3. Carley hit another homer in the eighth, another solo shot, to finish the scoring.
The Panthers scored twice in the first inning as Smith had a run-scoring double. Mark Shorey drove in another run with a single to center field. The Panthers had some chances to score more but left the bases loaded twice.
High Point visits No. 19-ranked Wake Forest Tuesday afternoon before hosting Appalachian State Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at Thomasville's Finch Field, home of the Coastal Plain League's Hi-Toms.
