Box Score 2 Steve Sherman drove in three runs in each game as UNC Asheville swept a Big South Conference doubleheader from High Point, 13-4 and 7-5, Saturday afternoon in Asheville.
The Bulldogs (9-10, 2-0 Big South) have won four straight and six of their last seven games, while the Panthers fell to 7-15 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Sherman went 6-for-9 in the twinbill with two solo home runs.
In the first game, Bulldog right-hander Aaron Rembert raised his record to 4-1 with a complete game win over the Panthers. He allowed six hits, four runs, walked two and struck out five. It was Rembert's third straight victory and first complete game of the year.
Matt Roberts drove in three runs in the first game victory, including a two-run single in the second inning. Sherman had a two-run single in the sixth to help put the Bulldogs in front, 7-3. Jake McConiga scored three runs and had two hits, while Scott Stotlar added two hits and an RBI. Robert Rudder came in as a pinch-hitter and delievered a two-run single in a six-run UNCA eighth inning.
HPU shortstop Colin Cronin had a two-run triple in the fifth, when the Panthers scored three times to tie the game at 3-3. Kevin Burch (2-4) was the hard-luck loser as two costly Panther errors helped lead to three unearned UNCA runs.
In the second game, Sherman had two solo home runs and a run-scoring single to lead the Bulldogs to the sweep. He homered in the first inning to put the Dogs up 1-0 and hit his second homer in the fourth gave UNCA the lead for good at 6-5.
Roberts delivered a two-run double in the second to help give the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead. High Point battled back with three runs in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5. Mark Shorey and Nick Thompson drove in the first two runs of the inning with the third run being scored on a Bulldog error.
The win went to Asheville starter Judson Ballard (1-2) who pitched five innings and allowed only two earned runs. He struck out four and walked two. Seth Denton retired all six batters he faced in the final two innings to record his second save of the season.
Shorey led High Point at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Matt Richardson also had two hits for the Panthers.
The teams will play the third and final game of their three-game series Sunday afternoon starting at 2:00 pm.
