Jamie D'Antona went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs to lead No. 13-ranked Wake Forest to a 9-2 rain-shortened win over High Point Wednesday afternoon at Erath Field.
The Deacons improve to 14-5, while the Panthers drop to 7-13 on the season.
The decision was made to end the game with Wake Forest batting in the top of the ninth.
The Deacons took a 2-0 lead in the first and chased HPU starter John Wanger (0-3) after just one inning. Adam Hubbard reached on a throwing error by HPU second baseman Rey Rojas, stole two bases, and scored on a base hit by Ryan Johnson, who later came home on a single by Jeff Ruziecki.
Wake scored single runs in the second and third and two in the fourth to take a 6-0 advantage before the Panthers put both their runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. Matt Richardson singled, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on a double by Chris Draska. After Ken Keesee was hit by a pitch and Brent Myers drew a walk, Draska scored on a single by Anthony Bell.
The Deacs put two more runs up in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Wake starter Brian Bach allowed just one hit in three innings of work before giving way to Kyle Young (1-0), who scattered two runs over four innings.
The Panthers head to UNC Asheville this weekend to battle the Bulldogs in a Big South series. The three-game set begins Friday at 2:00 pm.
Wake Forest visits North Carolina this weekend.
