High Point jumped on Virginia Tech for five runs in the second inning and held on for a 7-5 win over the Hokies Wednesday afternoon at English Field.
The Panthers (7-10) notched their fourth-consecutive win, and pounded out a season-high 15 hits. Virginia Tech fell to 6-5 on the season.
HPU pushed five across in the second to open things up with a bang. Ken Keesee led off with a single and advanced to second on an error and to third on a double by Chris Draska. A base hit by Jayson Hoffman scored Keesee, and a single by freshman Mark Shorey scored Draska. Hoffman came across when Matt Gorman reached on an error by Tech shortstop Spencer Harris, and Shorey scored on a balk by Hokie starter Brett Cory. A single by Rey Rojas brought home Gorman and gave the Panthers a 5-0 advantage.
High Point starter John Wanger allowed three runs in four innings before giving way to John Antignano, who threw 1 2/3 innings of relief and picked up the win (1-0). Travis Motsinger came in and shut the door with 3 1/3 innings of relief to earn his second save of the season.
Tech scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull within 6-5, but the Panthers added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single by Rojas which scored Brent Myers.
Rojas led HPU at the plate with three hits and two RBI.
High Point opens Big South play with a weekend series against Elon at Erath Field.
