Danny Gathings led all scorers with 22 points and helped High Point to an 88-63 win over cross-county rival North Carolina A&T Saturday night in the Millis Center.
The victory gives the Panthers (6-4) the unofficial Guilford County championship when coupled with HPU's Dec. 13 victory over UNC Greensboro (the county's other Division I team).
The Aggies fell to 0-8 this season.
Zione White (20 points), Javier Palacios (14 points) and Chris Meeks (11 points) also reached double-figures for HPU.
The Panthers used a 29-8 run to coast to a 40-18 advantage following a Meeks fast break layup from Jeff Allen with 5:58 left in the first half for HPU's largest lead of the opening frame. HPU cruised into the locker room with a comfortable 48-31 advantage.
The closest A&T got was 16 points after a Brian Faulcon layup with 16:58 to play that cut HPU's lead to 54-38... The Panthers took their biggest advantage of the game on a Javier Palacios three-pointer with 2:08 left to make it 85-57.
11 of the 12 High Point players in uniform played at least 10 minutes.
High Point shot 50 percent from the field, while holding the Aggies to 35 percent (including just 28 percent shooting after halftime). The teams combined for a sloppy 47 turnovers.
A&T got a double-double from Chris Ferguson (11 points, 12 rebounds). Steven Koger had a team-high 12 points for the Aggies.
The Panthers return to action Tuesday night when they host The Citadel in the Millis Center (7:00 pm). It's the final non-conference tilt of the season for HPU, which opens Big South Conference play next Saturday afternoon at Charleston Southern.
