Volleyball's Season Ended By Liberty, 3-0

Erin McKeown and Jennifer Belk combined for 33 kills to lead top-seeded Liberty to a 3-0 win over High Point in quarterfinal action of the 2003 Big South Volleyball Tournament, presented by Piggly Wiggly, on Friday in Birmingham, Ala.

Liberty (23-10) advanced by scores of 30-18, 30-25 and 30-28. High Point dropped to 8-28.

Belk posted a match-high 17 kills, followed by 16 from McKeown, who hit a match-best .333. Belk and McKeown added 15 and 14 digs, respectively. Theresa Passamani had 14 digs as well for the Lady Flames.

Big South Freshman of the Year Lindsey Pickens and Kamarsha Ryan led High Point with 11 kills apiece. Kim Anderson registered a match-high 16 digs for the Panthers, while Pickens and Heather Butt had 11 digs each. Jenelle Stouffer added 10 digs for HPU.

The Lady Flames jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to the hitting of McKeown and Becky Rudnick, who each hit .800 or better in game one.

Belk had an impressive second game, registering seven kills as LU held off the Panthers.

In game three, McKeown posted seven kills and Belk had six as the Lady Flames held off a feisty High Point squad.

Liberty faces UNC Asheville at 8:00 pm Saturday in one semifinal. Coastal Carolina and Winthrop meet at 5:30 pm in the first semifinal at Bill Battle Coliseum.
