Women's Soccer Falls To North Carolina In NCAA Tournament

High Point made its NCAA Women's Soccer Championship debut against the winningest program in collegiate soccer history Friday night.

But the Big South-champion Panthers were unable to become the first team this season to stamp a blemish on top-ranked and top-seeded North Carolina's record. The 16-time NCAA-champion Tar Heels ended HPU's season with an 8-0 win in NCAA first-round action at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.

North Carolina (22-0-0) advances to a second-round game Sunday against UNC Greensboro (a 2-1 winner over Wake Forest in Friday's second game). The loss put a wrap on HPU's magical season, which ends at 10-10-1 – the Panthers' best record since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 1998.

In the first-ever meeting between the two neighbors (located just 65 miles apart), the Panthers held the Tar Heels scoreless for nearly five minutes before Maggie Tomecka broke the ice when she put back a shot by Catherine Reddick that HPU keeper Katie Smith had blocked away.

Carolina made it 2-0 on a goal by Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year Lindsay Tarpley in the 8th minute, and Heather O'Reilly, Leigh Blomgren and Sara Rudolph added first-half goals to give the Tar Heels a 5-0 advantage at intermission.

Smith stopped three shots in the first half for the Panthers. Katie Myers replaced Smith in the 40th minute and made eight saves in goal.

Corrine Black scored twice after halftime and Anne Morrell added another goal to complete the scoring for UNC, which improved to 76-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

"This ends a great season for us," HPU head coach Tracie Foels said. "But I'm real proud of these girls. Getting here is what every team works for every year."
