High Point cut a 13-point halftime deficit to one, but Winthrop responded with a furious rally and put away the Panthers, 84-59, Friday night in Rock Hill before a regional television audience.
HPU (5-13, 1-6 Big South) fell for the seventh-consecutive contest as the defending Big South champion Eagles (13-7, 6-2) rolled on.
Winthrop won its sixth straight behind 16 points from Billy Houston and six other players added at least seven points each.
Danny Gathings (19 points) was the only Panther in double-figures.
Trailing 35-22 at the half, HPU scored the first 11 points of the second period, including all seven in freshman Jeff Allen's tally. HPU pulled within 37-36 on a Dustin Van Weerdhuizen three.
But Winthrop then built a 24-5 run which featured stifling defense and blistering shooting to put the game away. HPU was held without a field goal for more than five minutes, and by the time the smoke cleared, the damage was done.
HPU will look to snap the streak against Radford (5-14, 3-4) -- which was the Panthers' last victim back on Jan. 4. Tip-off Sunday in the Millis Center is set for 4:00 pm.
