Men's Basketball Falls To CSU In OT, 75-66

High Point used a 12-0 second half run to pull ahead of visiting Charleston Southern, but the Bucs fought back and outlasted the Panthers in overtime, 75-66, in a wild Big South contest Monday night at the Millis Center.

CSU outscored the Panthers 10-1 in the overtime period to record its second road win in three days.

Joe Knight led HPU with 20 points, while Danny Gathings and Dustin Van Weerdhuizen added 17 apiece.

The Bucs got 15 points apiece from Ed O'Neil and Gene Granger and 12 each from Charles White and Thomas Harrison.

CSU (8-7, 2-1 Big South) led by as many as 13 points in the first half before the Panthers (5-9, 1-3) closed the half with a 7-0 run to pull within 38-33 at the break.

Midway through the second period, the Panthers made their move when Charleston Southern went stone cold. HPU held the Bucs scoreless for more than eight minutes and turned a 53-47 deficit into a 59-53 lead with 6:26 to play.

But the Bucs rallied behind O'Neil, who accounted for eight of CSU's final 12 points in regulation. Knight hit one of two free throws to tie the score at 65-65 with 1:11 to play, and CSU missed three shots in the final minute without HPU attempting one.

The Panthers scored the first point of the overtime period (a Van Weerdhuizen free throw), and didn't find the net again for the final 4:57. CSU got the only points it needed on a layup by Granger with 3:57 to play.

HPU was 0-for-6 from the field in overtime.

The Panthers are back in action Saturday night with a 7:00 pm tip against future Big South foe Birmingham-Southern.

SPECIAL NOTE: At halftime of Monday's game, HPU President Dr. Jacob C. Martinson accepted a pair of awards from USA TODAY on behalf of the athletic department, which is being recognized for its stellar graduation rate. High Point ranks first in the Big South (76 percent) for graduating its student-athletes, and fourth among NCAA Division I schools in the state behind Davidson, Duke, and Wake Forest.
