Charleston Southern's Jordan Haar hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to help the Buccaneers edge High Point, 2-1, in an elmination game at the Big South Conference Baseball Championship Friday afternoon.
The loss ends the most successful season in more than a decade for the Panthers (26-31), who won more games than any HPU squad since 1990.
Kevin Burch (6-7) allowed just two earned runs and seven hits in a complete-game, eight-inning effort, but was saddled with the loss. Ian Holmen (5-7) got the win in relief for CSU, which advances to face the Liberty/Elon winner Saturday at noon.
"Burch threw an outstanding game for us," HPU head coach Sal Bando, Jr., said. "He basically made a one-pitch mistake, and it stings -- I don't think he deserved it, and I don't think we deserved it.
"But you've got to tip your cap to Charleston Southern. Those guys had our number all year, and they did what it took to win."
Kemp Smith accounted for HPU's lone run with a solo shot in the fifth off CSU starter Matt Rhodes.
"I'm proud of what we accomplished this season in terms of wins," Bando said. "But more importantly, we got better, and we improved as the year went on. Things happen in stages, and these guys were a big part of the most important step."
