Baseball Slugs Appalachian State, 9-3

Michael Lowman's fourth-inning grand slam help High Point get its 20th victory of the 2002 season by defeating Appalachian State, 9-3, Thursday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Erath Field.

The Panthers improve to 20-23, while ASU dips to 13-25 on the year.

The game was a makeup of a contest postponed due to rain and originally scheduled for March 19 in Thomasville.

Lowman's slam off ASU's Andrew Kline was the biggest blow. It scored Jayson Hoffman, Kemp Smith and Ryan Thiede and gave the Panthers a 6-3 lead.

HPU overcame a three-run ASU first inning, which saw the Mountaineers get a two-run single from Eric Pittman and an RBI single from Brian Chapman.

John Cavanaugh and Ryan Thiede added solo homers for HPU. Kevin Burch didn't allow an earned run in seven innings to record his fifth win of the year (5-5).

Kline (0-2) took the loss.

While Appalachian State opens a three-game home series with East Tennessee State Saturday at noon, High Point will have eight days off before next weekend's series against Winthrop in Rock Hill. The three-game set begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5, at 4:00 pm.
