Panthers Downed By A&T, 6-2

High Point managed just three hits against four North Carolina A&T pitchers, and the Aggies got a mammoth two-run homer from Jeffrey King to hold off the homestanding Panthers, 6-2, in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Erath Field.

A&T improves to 14-17 on the season, while the Panthers (19-23) dropped their second straight after winning a series at Elon over the weekend.

The Aggies' Charles Miller (1-4) allowed just one earned run in six innings of work to earn his first victory of the season. Riley Gostisha (5-4) took the loss for HPU.

The Panthers got on the board first with a single run in the bottom of the 1st. Justin Keegan drew a lead-off walk, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by A&T catcher Kevin Allen. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Andy Harney.

A&T responded with a pair of runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings off Gostisha. Dustin Hall scored on a groundout by Bruce Williams, and Quincy Jones crossed the plate on a double by Allen to give the Aggies a 2-1 lead.

King's blast came in the 3rd following a lead-off walk to Jason Battle. The Aggies completed the scoring when Jones led off the 4th with a triple to left center and came home on a double by Williams. He moved to third on an Allen base hit and scored on a sacrifice fly by Battle.

Kemp Smith, John Cavanaugh, and Jayson Hoffman had the only hits for the Panthers.

David White provided the brightest spot on an otherwise dismal day for the Panthers, throwing 4.2 innings of scoreless relief.

North Carolina A&T hosts Savannah State on Saturday at noon, while the Panthers make up a game rained out earlier in the season against Appalachian State on Thursday (3:00 pm) at Erath Field.
