Baseball Falls At UNCG, 14-8

Host UNC Greensboro used an 11-run 3rd inning to coast to a 14-8 win over High Point Wednesday night in non-conference baseball action.

The Panthers drop to 17-20 on the season, while UNCG improves to 23-14.

HPU starter Clayton Gordner was tagged with the loss and was the victim of the Spartans' hot bats early. After retiring the side in order in the 1st, Gordner surrendered three unearned runs in the 2nd and then was chased in the 3rd, when the Spartans sent 16 men to the plate and scored 11 runs.

High Point got single runs in the 1st and 8th, three in the 3rd (on a two-run Keegan single and a Chris Vinar single), and three in the 9th (on singles by Vinar, Ryan Thiede, and Matt O'Neil).

Ryan Lurate made his first appearance of the season in relief of Gordner and allowed just one earned run while fanning four in four innings of work.

Scooter Michael (9-0) got win for the Spartans. Ben Gordon went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored for UNCG.

High Point heads into a weekend series at archrival Elon. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon and a single game on Sunday at Latham Park.
