Jeff Moore won his first collegiate start, scattering five hits over 6 2/3 innings, as host UNC Wilmington downed High Point, 6-1, in baseball action Wednesday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improve to 9-3 on the season. High Point had its record evened at 8-8.
Moore (1-0) allowed five hits while walking two and striking out two for the Seahawks. HPU starter Clayton Gordner (0-1) surrendered six runs on eight hits, issuing a pair of walks and fanning two, over five innings.
Senior second baseman Michael Lowman went 2-for-4 and scored once and junior shortstop Colin Cronin went 2-for-3 with a double to lead High Point.
UNCW plated three runs in the bottom half of the first for a quick 3-0 advantage. With one out, senior outfielder Zach Harris doubled to leftfield and Hemingway reached on an infield hit. After Matt Wright flew out to center, Pilegard slapped an RBI single to score Harris and Hemingway then scored on an RBI double by sophomore outfielder Pete Grimm. Pilegard came home later on a wild pitch.
The Seahawks scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth to open up a 6-0 cushion before the Panthers averted the shutout with a single tally in the eighth inning. Lowman and Ken Keesee started the rally with back-to-back singles. When Harney hit into a force at second, Lowman advanced to third and raced home on a throwing error by UNCW second baseman Russ Simmerman.
HPU entertains Mount St. Mary's on Friday at 1:00 pm EST.
