Ryan Thiede's base hit in the bottom of the 8th inning scored John Cavanaugh and gave the Panthers a 2-1 win over UNC Asheville in the rubber game of a three-game series Saturday at Erath Field.

The Panthers improve to 15-12 (2-1 in the Big South) with the victory. UNCA dips to 7-9 (1-2).

Riley Gostisha surrendered just one run in eight innings of work to pick up his team-leading fifth victory of the season (5-2). Rusty Bodenheimer pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year. Jason Walker (0-2) took the loss in relief of Bulldog starter Mark Schuurman.

High Point took a 1-0 lead in the 5th on Jayson Hoffman's first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.

The Bulldogs tied things back up in the 6th when Jake McConiga laced a one-out double to left center, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Bill Carley.

In the 8th, Cavanaugh doubled to right center and scored from second on Thiede's base hit.

High Point is back in action Tuesday afternoon against Campbell at Erath Field. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm. UNC Asheville visits Western Carolina, also Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
