David White sparkled on the mound for seven innings and got plenty of offensive support as visiting High Point (13-11) defeated Davidson (10-16) on Wednesday afternoon, 11-1.
A seven-run fourth inning for the Panthers put the game well out of reach.
Thanks to a two-run single by Andy Harney in the first, HPU led 2-1 going into the fourth inning. Wildcat hurler Brian Akin (0-4) started the inning well with a strikeout. But the next six hitters all reached base on alternating doubles and walks. Colin Cronin had an RBI double, and John Cavanaugh drove in two with his two-bagger.
After reliever Andy Demko got the second out, Matt O'Neil was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Michael Lowman, who made the first out of the inning, then stroked a two-run single. Kemp Smith completed the scoring with an RBI single, his second hit of the frame.
The Panthers scored their last two runs in the eighth on a two-run single by Matt Richardson.
Meanwhile, White (1-3) was dominating in picking up his first victory of the year. Only in two innings did Davidson get runners into scoring position. White scattered six hits and walked just two, allowing just one run while striking out seven.
The lone run for the Wildcats came in the third inning after a lead-off walk to freshman Eli Benefield, and one-out singles by senior Jack Purcell and junior D.J. Dailey.
For High Point, Cronin collected four hits in five trips to the plate, including a pair of doubles. Cavanaugh banged out three hits, scored three runs and drove in two others.
Senior Tim Frend was the lone Wildcat with two hits on the afternoon, extending his hitting streak to nine games. Junior Chris Emond had the lone extra-base hit in his first collegiate start with a double.
High Point opens up its Big South slate by hosting a three-game series against UNC Asheville. The first game is Friday at 3:00 pm at Erath Field.
