O'Neil Carries Panthers Past Towson, 4-3

Matt O'Neil's three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning gave High Point a 4-2 lead, and the Panthers held on to beat Towson, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at George S. Erath Field.

The Panthers pushed their record for the season above .500 at 11-10. Towson falls to 7-6-1.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the 6th, HPU left fielder Justin Keegan drew a walk off Towson starter John Caslin, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by Tigers catcher Casey Stidham. Then right fielder Andy Harney reached on an error by Towson second baseman Tom Trela, scoring Keegan.

Designated hitter Ken Keesee smacked an infield hit, and then O'Neil pounded his first homer of the season, over the right-field fence, to give the Panthers a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Tigers clawed within 4-3 in the 7th on an RBI gorundout by Mike Costello, but could get no closer.

Clayton Gordner (1-1) got his first victory of the season for the Panthers. Caslin (1-2) was saddled with the loss, while Chris Chandler threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for his fourth save of the year.

The teams play again Sunday at 2:00 pm at Erath Field.
