Brown built a 2-0 lead and held on to edge High Point, 2-1, in the opening game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Bears got their first run in the top of the 2nd inning, when third baseman Jeff Nichols singled to left, advanced to third on a single by designated hitter Harris Frankel, and scored on a fielder's choice by left fielder Matt Kutler.
Brown took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 6th on a two-out rally. Nichols reached on a throwing error by third baseman Matt O'Neil and advanced to second on the play. He took third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Kutler.
High Point loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the 7th (the final inning of the game) when designated hitter Kemp Smith was hit by a pitch and pinch-hitter Ken Keesee and left fielder Justin Keegan followed with singles. But Brown reliever Dan Spring entered and got three straight outs, one of which came on a sacrifice fly to center by center fielder John Cavanaugh, scoring Smith.
Jonathan Stern (2-0) allowed one run in six innings of work to grab the win. David White (0-3) took the loss, despite allowing just one earned run in six innings. Spring got the save.
