The Panthers used a three-run 6th inning to break a 1-1 tie and earn a split of a Saturday doubleheader with a 4-1 win over Brown.
High Point centerfielder John Cavanaugh scored the first run of the game when he reached on an error in the 1st inning, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a fly out, and scored on a single by designated hitter Ken Keesee.
The Bears (4-2) responded with a run of their own to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the 4th. Left fielder Matt Kutler tripled to left center and scored on a base hit by first baseman Shaun Gallagher.
But it was the bottom of the 6th which decided the game. HPU right fielder Andy Harney led off the inning with a double down the left-field line, Keesee walked, and first baseman Ryan Thiede advanced both runners with a key sacrifice bunt. After third baseman Kemp Smith was intentionally walked, pinch-hitter Matt O'Neil drove in Harney with a sacrifice fly to left off Brown reliever Chris Davidson.
Panther leftfielder Justin Keegan then reached on an error by BU shortstop John Magaletti, which allowed Keesee to score, and then Cavanaugh earned an RBI when he was hit by a pitch, scoring Smith.
Chris Chandler (2-1) got the win in relief of Clayton Gordner, who allowed just one run in 5 2/3 innings. Sam Jennings (0-2) took the loss for Brown.
The teams play the rubber game of a three-game set Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
