High Point managed two runs in the eighth inning to hold off North Carolina A&T, 6-4, in rain-soaked War Memorial Stadium on Wednesday.
The game, originally scheduled for nine innings, was called in the 8th due to a mixture of sleet and freezing rain.
Ken Keesee tripled (his first collegiate hit) and scored on an error by A&T second baseman Carlos Geathers to break a 4-4 tie. The Panthers (3-1) would manage an insurance run on a bases-loaded walk by Michael Lowman. Chris Chandler retired the side in order in the bottom of the 8th to earn his first save of the year. Aggie left-hander Tim Vangel (0-1) took the loss, giving up two runs in 1 1/3 innings.
For the third consecutive game, the Aggies staged a late rally to tie the game. In the seventh, Bruce Williams ran out his second infield single of the afternoon. He would later score the tying run on a bases-leaded walk by Kendrick Bell. But A&T (2-6) could not push anymore across, as Rusty Bodenheimer (1-0) got Jeffrey King to pop out to left, and Patrick Battle hit a comebacker to the pitcher, leaving the bases full.
High Point drew nine free passes, three of them in the decisive 8th inning.
The Panthers will play host to Wofford on Saturday (12:00 pm) in a doubleheader which doubles as HPU's home opener.
