Albany Tops Panthers, 10-4

Albany jumped on High Point pitching Monday afternoon to claim its first victory of the season, 10-4, over the Panthers at Alumni Field.

The Great Danes (1-2) eaerned their inaugural victory of the 2002 campaign by pounding out 11 hits and chasing HPU starter David White after 3 2/3 innings.

High Point (7-5) left 12 men on base and failed to take advantage of several key opportunities.

Albany scored two runs in the 2nd inning when it loaded the bases off White and Tony Vallone drew a walk, scoring Jake Toms. A groundout by Matt Crudo scored Dan Schoonmaker and gave Albany a 2-0 lead.

The Great Danes put another run on the board in the top of the 4th before the Panthers counted with a pair in the bottom of the inning. Ken Keesee reached on an error and scored Justin Keegan and Matt O'Neil to get HPU within 3-2.

But Albany kept pounding the ball and got two runs in the 6th and 8th innings and three in the 9th to secure the win.

Adam Kroft (1-0) allowed just one hit in five innings for Albany. White (0-2) was tagged with the loss.

High Point hosts defending ACC champion Wake Forest at Alumni Field on Tuesday. First pitch is 2:30 pm.
