East Carolina outshot visiting High Point, 27-9, and outscored the Panthers, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon in men's soccer action in Greenville.
ECU scored in the 25th and 87th minutes to record the victory.
The Pirates (3-5-1) got on the board in the 25th minute when Brian Deutsch scored off a pass from Michael Logan.
The hosts outshot the Panthers 17-1 in the first half and had six corner kicks compared to none for High Point, but managed just the one goal before halftime.
In the second half, the Panthers (2-6-1) got some offense going and recorded eight shots, but were still outshot 10-8. HPU goalkeeper Eric Lona kept his team in the game by making nine saves, including a pair of ECU penalty kicks in the second half.
In the final ten minutes, the Panthers made a last-gasp attempt to get on the board and pushed an extra attacker forward, but ECU's Joe Ellington took advantage and was able to add an insurance goal in the 87th minute when he rebounded a Reed Avren miss and stuck it in the net for the 2-0 final score.
The Panthers still lead the all-time series, 3-2.
"I was proud of our team being able to come back in the second half and make a game of it," HPU head coach Peter Broadley said. "Eric played an absolutely wonderful game to keep us in it. We had some good contributions from some people that won't show up in the stats, and some good performances off the bench."
High Point welcomes Mount Olive to Albion-Millis Stadium for Homecoming 2002. The match will be played Saturday at 3:00 pm.
