Doug Alves scored a game-high 14 points and Dustin Van Weerdhuizen recorded his second-consecutive double-double as High Point (1-1) picked up its inaugural victory of the 2001-02 campaign with a 63-57 win over William & Mary Tuesday night at the Millis Center.
The Panthers shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but cooled off considerably in the final 20 minutes. Still, High Point was able to hold off the pesky Tribe (0-3) in a physical contest that featured nine second-half lead changes.
HPU led 36-32 at halftime, but William & Mary's Sherman Rivers put the Tribe ahead 38-37 with a layup with 15:20 to go. The Panthers would take control of a see-saw battle thanks to 12 points off the bench from Ron Barrow and 10 points and 10 rebounds from Van Weerdhuizen. A jumper by Van Weerdhuizen broke a 55-55 tie with 2:38 to play that gave the Panthers the lead for good.
William & Mary's leading scorer was Reid Markham (12 points off the bench), while Mike Johnson added 11 points.
