HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team is ranked No. 17 in the latest 11.7 Mid-Major Baseball Top 25 poll, marking the highest national ranking in program history.
High Point has gotten off to a hot start and maintained its success through the first 31 games of the season. Head Coach
Joey Hammond has led his team to a 21-10 overall record, including a 7-2 mark in conference play.
The Panthers have gained national attention not only for their strong record, but also for key wins over Power Four opponents such as Duke, Wake Forest, and a series victory over No. 9 Florida. High Point is coming off a program-record 11-game winning streak, which included conference weekend sweeps over Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb.
Offensively, the Panthers have been relentless, averaging seven runs per game while posting a .301 team batting average.
Seojun Oh leads the team with a .373/.471/.673 slash line, along with nine doubles, eight home runs, and a team-high 33 RBI. Seven players are batting over .300 this season.
Willie Ponce and
Lane Allen have been key contributors at the top of the lineup. Ponce has started all 31 games in the leadoff spot, batting .339 with five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 25 RBI, and 33 runs scored. Allen is hitting .331 with eight doubles, three triples, five home runs, and 31 RBI.
On the defensive side, High Point's pitching staff has been a major factor in the team's success. The weekend rotation features
Wade Walton,
Ty Brachbill, and
Aidan Paul, while the bullpen has also delivered strong performances.
Dylan Story leads the team with five saves, followed by
Tyler Shafer with three.
Noah Zimmerman holds a 2.78 ERA with a 2-0 record in seven appearances, and
Jack Carey has been dominant out of the bullpen with a 1.35 ERA and a 2-0 record over 20 innings of work.
The Panthers will look to continue their strong play when they host North Carolina A&T State University at Truist Point on Tuesday, April 7 at 6:00 p.m.
