HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team is ranked No. 10 in the latest 11.7 Mid-Major Baseball Top 25 poll, marking the highest national ranking in program history.
High Point has maintained its success through the first 39 games of the season. Head Coach
Joey Hammond has led his team to a 26-13 overall record, including a 11-4 mark in conference play.
The Panthers have gained national attention not only for their strong record, but also for key wins over Power Four opponents such as Duke, Wake Forest, and a series victory over No. 9 Florida. HPU is most recently coming off a series win over Charleston Southern University.
Offensively, the Panthers have been relentless, averaging seven runs per game while posting a .301 team batting average.
Seojun Oh leads the team with a .379/.474/.707 slash line, along with 10 doubles, 12 home runs, and a team-high 43 RBI. Four Panthers are batting over .300 this season.
Willie Ponce,
Lane Allen, and
Frank Kelly have been key contributors at the top of the lineup. Ponce has started all 39 games in the leadoff spot, batting .333 with eight doubles, two triples, four home runs, 27 RBI, and 40 runs scored. Allen is hitting .329 with nine doubles, three triples, six home runs, and 35 RBI. Kelly has emerged as a key bat in the lineup playing in all 39 games so far with a .333 batting average, 11 doubles, one home run, 18 RBI, 29 runs scored, and a .908 OPS.
On the defensive side, High Point's pitching staff has been a major factor in the team's success. The weekend rotation features
Wade Walton,
Ty Brachbill, and
Aidan Paul, while the bullpen has also delivered strong performances.
Dylan Story leads the team with six saves, followed by
Tyler Shafer with four.
Noah Zimmerman holds a 2.57 ERA with a 2-1 record in nine appearances, and
Jack Carey has been dominant out of the bullpen with a 1.33 ERA and a 3-0 record over 27 innings of work.
The Panthers will look to continue their strong play when they match up with No. 2 University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Tuesday, April 21 at 6:00 p.m.
