Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "They kicked our butt today. Radford came out ready to go and they beat us in all aspects. We did not shoot the ball well; we did not finish well at the rim, and we let them get hot from three. That spread us out and then they were able to get to the basket."
Right from the start neither team found success from the floor. The Highlanders finally jumped out to a 4-0 lead before HPU was able to get on the board with 3:49 left in the first quarter. A tip-in from Radford and a three from
Chana Paxixe took a 6-6 game to the second quarter.
High Point took its first lead after
Jaleesa Lawrence knocked down a layup to start the quarter, followed by a jumper from
Lauren Scott. The Panthers went up four, 15-11, after a layup from
Shakira Baskerville, but the Highlanders turned it around and went on a 6-0 run to take a five-point lead. A made free throw by
Nevaeh Zavala made it a three-point game before Radford went back up five to take it to halftime, 25-20.
Radford started to open its lead in the third quarter after they heated up from beyond the arc. They took a double-digit lead with 5:44 on the clock after a fastbreak three pointer.
Dom Nesland cut the lead to 13 after she made both of her foul shots. With 17 seconds left on the clock, Scott drained a three to take High Point down 10, 48-38 to the fourth quarter.
The start of the quarter looked promising as Lawrence connected in the paint to start things off for HPU. Nesland hit a three to bring the Radford lead down to seven with 8:15 left. Just a few minutes later, Lawrence went on to knock one down from beyond the arc to make it a, 54-46 game. Radford went on an 11-2 run in the last five minutes of the game to take the 17-point win over the Panthers.
Nesland and Scott led the team with 11 points, as Lawrence trailed with 10 of her own. Zavala brought in seven boards and tallied nine points.
Up Next: High Point will hit the road on Saturday, February 8 as they take on UNC Asheville at 2:00 p.m.
