Panthers Earn the Victory on Saturday Night

HIGH POINT, N.C. –  Nakyah Terrell scored her 1,000th career point as the High Point University women's basketball team defeated Presbyterian, 62-43, on Saturday night.

Site: Qubein Center
Score: High Point 62, Presbyterian 43
Records: High Point (12-10, 7-2), Presbyterian (4-18, 2-7)

Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "I'm happy with the fact that we got the win. I'm not going to say that I think that we played well. I thought we were undisciplined on the defensive end, fouled them way too many times, put them at the free throw line way too many times, and on the offensive side of things, we also turned the ball over and a lot of that is focus and being undisciplined. We did make enough plays to win though. I know we won by 19, but I think we can be better. I think we have a much better team, and we have been playing better, so I just want us to get back to that and playing team defense. A lot of these fouls came because we weren't helping each other, and we weren't in the right gap."

Another offensive domination for the Panthers as they took home their second win over the Blue Hose during the regular season. High Point's defense led by Shakira Baskerville, and Jaleesa Lawrence managed to put a stop in Presbyterian's game plan to hold them to 43 points.

High Point took a 10-4 lead in the first quarter before Terrell drained a three pointer to put herself over the 1,000-career point mark. A good layup and an and-one for Lawrence took High Point to its 10-point lead before the Blue Hose cut it down to eight before the end of the first quarter.

Both offenses came out cold for the second quarter as scoring on both sides of the court was slow. Chana Paxixe took High Point's lead to 12, 20-8 after a good layup in the paint and a jumper with 8:03 left. It was not until 3:12 that we saw the next basket for either team. A three pointer from Baskerville gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game so far as they led by 14, 23-9. Presbyterian went on a 6-2 run to close out the first half down eight, 25-17.

High Point came out firing in the second half as Lawrence and Baskerville both drained a pair of three balls to kick things off. HPU held a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the quarter. With the clock winding down, Paxixe was let loose on a fast break layup to extend the Panther lead to 18, 45-27. Aaliyah Collins finished the quarter for High Point as she made both of her free throws to take the 47-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

Terrell put High Point up 20 to start with a jumper in the paint. Nevaeh Zavala connected on a three-pointer followed by a layup to extend the lead to 23. High Point was able to coast its way to zeros on the clock as they secured another conference victory to hand them a share of first place in the standings. High Point took home a 19-point victory on Disney Night in the Qubein Center.

Up Next: High Point will remain on home court as the Highlanders of Radford University come to town on Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
