High Point Selected to Play No. 4 Seed Kansas in First Round of NCAA Volleyball Tournament

On Selection Show Sunday, the High Point University volleyball team heard its name called on ESPN, as all 32 team seedings were announced for the first round of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament. The Panthers return to the big stage for the third straight season after gaining an automatic qualifier following the 3-0 sweep in Big South Conference Tournament over UNC Asheville. HPU is scheduled to take on the No. 4 seed University of Kansas (22-10) on Thursday, December 4 in Lawrence, Kansas. The first serve is set for 7:30 PM EST.
 
Also playing at Kansas is Miami (26-5) and Tulsa (25-6). The winners of Thursday's contest will move on to play on Friday, December 5 at 7 PM EST against the winner of the Tulsa and Miami game.

"Qualifying for the NCAA Tournament is an achievement you are grateful for every year," Head Coach Ryan Meek stated. "To hear your name called and get to compete one last time as a group is priceless. We're looking forward to going and competing against Kansas!"

Last Time Out
High Point defeated UNC Asheville in the Big South Tournament Championship with a 3-0 victory. The Panthers were led by the Tournament MVP, Addison Freeland with 13 kills and two blocks. Élodie Lalonde was right there with her registering 13 kills and three blocks. Making the All-Tournament team, Brooke Briscoe helped guide the defense with 16 digs and Remy Catojo dished out 42 assists.
 
The Panthers hold an 18-9 overall record and were crowned the Big South regular-season champs after finishing the regular-season with a 12-2 record. Élodie Lalonde (3.74 kills per set), Addison Freeland (2.42 kills per set) and Maya Bukovcan (2.20 kills per set) all pace the team on the front line attack. Remy Catojo leads the team in assists averaging 7.95 per set and Kea Whillock guides the back line with 4.14 per set.
 
About the Jayhawks
Coming from the Big 12 conference, the Jayhawks finished the season 22-10 overall and 13-5 in conference. Kansas closed out the Big 12 regular-season with a four-set win over UCF on Saturday, November 29. The Jayhawks are led by Rhian Swanson, a senior pin hitter from McPherson, Kansas and Jovana Zelenovic, a freshman pin hitter from Novi Sad, Serbia. McPherson averages 3.10 kills per set and Zelenovic averages 2.93 kills per set with each hitting over .250 for the season.  
 
This will be the Panthers and Jayhawks first match up in program history.
 
NCAA Tournament History
  • Since becoming Division I, HPU has been to the NCAA Tournament five times.
  • With 2025 being the sixth appearance, the Panthers have been to the Tournament in three back-to-back seasons.
  • Most recently, High Point matched up with Tennessee in 2023 and Oregon in 2024.
  • The farthest HPU has made it in the Tournament was in the spring 2021 covid-19 season with a first-round victory over UCF, 3-2.
