Women's Track & Field Jake Derene

Panthers to Compete at Track & Field Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. – Members from the High Point University Track & Field team will be competing in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, airing June 21-30th. Sydney Horn from the current roster will be competing in women's pole vault, along with volunteer coaches Kristen Brown, and Megan Houston. HPU alum ('16) and volunteer coach, Austin Miller and active assistant coach, Scott Houston will be competing in men's pole vault. Horn, Brown, and Miller all competed at last year's USA Track & Field Championships.
"I am very excited to be at my third Olympic trials both as a competitor and a coach," coach Houston stated.

Houston began coaching at HPU in the fall of 2015 and qualified for his first Olympic Trials in the spring of 2016.

"I'm pretty fortunate that all my experience at the Olympic trials has been with High Point University," Houston said. "My time coaching at HPU has been very conducive to building a successful environment for athletes and myself. I'm super excited for Sydney Horn as a High Point student-athlete and Austin Miller as an alumni to compete in their first and 2nd Olympic trials while training at High Point. I can't say enough about Mike Esposito as head coach and High Point University athletics as they have encourage this elite training group to evolve and thrive to create elite athletes at the Olympic level. I want to thank our athletic department, strength staff, and athletic training staff in their support through the years. My wife, Megan Houston, and Kristen Brown have been wonderful additions to our volunteer staff setting great examples for all the student-athletes we have on the team. To have such a large group representing High Point University is something we will forever be grateful for."

Horn graduated from HPU with a bachelor's degree in May and is working towards her masters. She is currently tied with Brown as the No. 14 women's pole vaulter in the country. Megan Houston is currently No. 20, while Miller is No. 4 in men's pole vault, and Scott Houston is No. 19.

Horn is a seven-time All-American and has placed third multiple times at the NCAA Championships. She placed her career best second place in 2021-22 at the NCAA Division I Indoor National Championships.

"She is ready to compete with the big dogs at the U.S. Olympic Trials," Houston stated. "We are excited to have her show up and show out and put the HPU jersey on and prove that we are a powerhouse Track & Field program."
