High Point Falls to No.19 Richmond

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University men's lacrosse welcomed its third ranked opponent to Vert Stadium on Saturday night for the annual Military Appreciation game. After a strong start by the Panthers, High Point fell to No. 19 University of Richmond, 9-5, in the team's third conference game of the season.

High Point was led by Luca Accardo on the face-off, winning 13 of his 14 attempts to help the team go 15-for-17 overall.

Site: Vert Stadium
Score: High Point 5, No. 19 Richmond
Records: High Point (7-6, 1-2), Richmond (8-4, 3-0)

High Point's offense was fired up in the opening two minutes of the game. Richmond won the initial face-off but a quick turnover by the Spiders gave HPU the possession. Tommy Meehan scored on an unassisted goal to put the first points on the board. Accardo won his first face-off of the night to set the Panthers up for a second goal, scored by Jack VanOverbeke.

Four minutes ticked off the clock before Richmond answered with its first goal of the game to make it 2-1 with nine minutes left in the first quarter. Zack Overend was putting in work in goal for the Panthers as he collected three saves in the first quarter to hold the Spiders to one goal.

Both teams remained scoreless until the 13:27 mark in the second quarter as the equalizer from the Spiders made it a 2-2 game. In the last 10 minutes of the first half, Richmond scored four goals to go up 6-2 at the break.

Early in the third, Meehan found Jack Sawyer cutting through the middle for a quick over the top pass to him to score HPU's third goal of the game.

High Point was only able to score one goal in the third quarter as the Spiders advanced to an 8-3 lead.

The Panthers still had a lot of fight left. VanOverbeke netted his second goal of the game to make it 8-4 before he found Brayden Mayea curling down the middle to put the Panthers within three with just under nine minutes left to go in the game.

High Point managed to get off four shots in the last eight minutes of action but were unable to secure anymore goals before the final buzzer.
