HPU Drops Mid-Week Matchup With UNCG

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point Baseball team fell to the UNCG Spartans,13-7, on Tuesday night.

Site: Williard Stadium
Score: High Point 7, UNCG 13
Records: High Point (3-10, 0-0) UNCG (8-4, 0-0)

Head Coach Joey Hammond: "Unfortunately we haven't been able to find a way to avoid giving up free bases (10 tonight) or allowing the big inning. Anytime you fall behind 8-0, it's going to be very difficult. I liked how our offense responded in the middle innings and got us back within 3 runs and in the ballgame. We just could not stop the bleeding and get a clean inning in defense all night long. We will continue to give guys opportunities to take the roles we need filled in order to compete at the level we expect to."

The freshman, Joey Tuttoilmondo got the ball in tonight's mid-week matchup with the Spartans. Tuttoilmondo pitched two innings, allowing four runs, on three hits. Dalton Olsovsky, Tyler Romanias, Adam Grintz, Noah Carter, Christian Baker, and Bryan Rivera all took the mound for HPU tonight.

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead off a grand slam to right field in the top of the second. In the third, they jumped to an 8-0 lead after another grand slam.

High Point got on the board in the fourth as Brett Ahalt singled to right field, scoring Charlie Klingler and Cael Chatham. In the same inning, Justin Ruiz blasted a 378 foot 3-run home run to left center for his first career home run. High Point brought it back to 8-5 in the fourth inning.

UNCG took a four-run lead in the fifth off a wild pitch. In the sixth, they jumped to a 10-5 lead off a single to left center. The Spartans jumped out again as another homer was hit to bring it to 11-5.

High Point went scoreless in the seventh inning. In the eighth, the Spartans extended their lead to 13-5.

HPU was able to add two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Oliver Cush got his first career hit and RBI as Xavier Cumbee came home to score. Miggy Echazarreta singled to center as Cush came home to score.

High Point fell to UNCG, 13-7.

Up Next: High Point will play a three-game series against Rutgers at First National Bank Stadium in Greensboro. First game is on Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m.
