High Point Falls in A-10 Opener

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The High Point University men's lacrosse team opened the Atlantic 10 regular season at Saint Joseph's University in Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers fell to the Hawks, 15-7.

"Hats off to St. Joe," Head Coach Jon Torpey stated. "They outplayed us in every phase of the game today. We've got work to do. I look forward to seeing how our group responds."

Site: Sweeney Field
Score: High Point 7, Saint Joseph's 15
Records: High Point (6-5, 0-1), Saint Joseph's (6-3, 1-0)

Saint Joseph's jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start the game. HPU answered with two goals of their own to make it a one goal game. Tommy Meehan netted the first while Nick Rizzo netted the second.

The Hawks scored two goals in the last minute of the first quarter to increase their goal total to five. Matt Lutzel caught a pass from Meehan and found the back of the net with 15 seconds left in the first to make it 5-3 before entering the second quarter.

Saint Joseph's went on a 5-0 run in the second quarter. Lutzel took advantage of a man-up opportunity and scored off a pass from Jack VanOverbeke to make it 10-4. Before the end of the first half, VanOverbeke dished out another pass for an HPU goal by Collin Cooke to make it 11-5 at the half.

In the last 30 minutes of action HPU closed the gap to five at 12-7 with a nasty goal from Ian Cann that left his defender on the ground at the 6:41 mark in the third quarter.

Following Cann's goal, HPU went cold on the attack and were unable to net another goal. Saint Joseph's scored three more goals in the fourth to end the game 15-7.
