Head Coach Joey Hammond: "Great weekend, first sweep of the year and it feels good. I'm proud of our guys. We had good and positive energy all weekend long. We dealt with a bit of adversity, and we answered each time having our offense be relentless all weekend… I can't say enough about our pitching staff. It was difficult to pitch this weekend with the way the wind was going but I'm really proud of them."
Matt Little got the ball to start Sunday's game with the Spiders. Little went seven innings, allowing three runs, on nine hits, striking out eight batters.
"
Matt Little did an awesome job, Hammond said." He minimized things, seven innings, no free bases. You give up a couple of solo home runs, but we talk about how those don't beat us. I'm really proud of him and our staff."
The Spiders found the run column first as a run scored in the top of the first off a double to right center.
Once again, HPU answered in the bottom half of the first inning as
Charlie Klingler singled to left center bringing home two runs.
Richmond found another run to make it a 2-2 ball game after a solo home run to left field.
Dawson Harman with an 0-1 count gave it right back to them as he hit a moon shot to left field to bring the lead back to HPU, 3-2.
Adam Stuart then hit a SAC fly to right field allowing
Konni Durschlag to tag from third base.
In the third, Durschlag grounded out to shortstop but that allowed for
Miggy Echazarreta to cross the plate to make it a 5-2 Panther lead. The Spiders added another run in the fourth off another solo shot to center field.
In what was a six run sixth inning for the Panthers, Stuart blasted one to left field for a three-run home run.
Cael Chatham also tallied two RBIs and Klingler and Simpson both scored off a wild pitch and a passed ball. High Point took a commanding, 11-3 lead.
Stuart recorded his 200
th career hit in the Purple and White in the seventh inning as he beat out an infield single to shortstop.
"I have to mention something about Stuart, Hammond said." "He got his 200
th hit, that is a big deal. It couldn't happen to a better person."
Echazarreta clobbered his first long ball of the season in the eighth to bring it to a 14-3 ball game. Durschlag with a 2-0 count found his pitch and took a healthy hack at it as it found its way over the center field wall for his first home run as a Panther. This brought the game to an end as High Point lead by more than 10 runs.
Little earned his second win on the year to improve his record to 2-2.
Up Next: High Point will head to Davidson College for a mid-week matchup on Tuesday March 26. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m.
