Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "A great team win, this one definitely feels good. I haven't beat Davidson yet, I owe it to the players. We put together a game plan and they bought into it and we played as a team. I think we played very unselfishly, and the girls were rewarded for it. I'm really happy and proud of them."
A cold start by the Wildcats allowed High Point to jump out to an early 12-point lead after the first quarter. Davidson was struggling to put the ball in the hoop as they only hit three free throws to make it a 15-3 game after the first 10 minutes.
Davidson wasted no time in the second quarter as they hit their first field goal draining a three pointer to kick things off.
Aaliyah Collins who earned the start today was a threat on both offense and defense as she had a steal and a score to give HPU its first points of the quarter. The Wildcats worked their way to bring it back to a seven point game before
Dom Nesland knocked down a jumper to extend the lead back to nine. Two good layups by
Jaleesa Lawrence and Collins took the lead to 13 points before Davidson made some shots to head into the break down 10, 27-17.
Collins started the third quarter with a behind the back deke into a layup to give HPU its first points. Nesland would then go on to drain a three to take what would be the biggest lead of the quarter up 13 points. The HPU defense scored eight points off turnovers to push the Panthers to the fourth quarter up, 40-27.
Nesland drained another from beyond the arc to give HPU a 16-point lead. The Panthers went up 17 points after Lawrence made a layup before Davidson slowly started to cut the lead. The Wildcats worked their way back to an eight point deficit with a good three pointer and then continued to stun the HPU offense as they brought the game to within four points, 51-47 with two minutes remaining. After another good three from the Wildcats with 20 seconds remaining to make it a two-point game, High Point was lucky enough to do just what they needed to as they closed out the game after a few free throws.
Shakira Baskerville led the Panthers with 10 rebounds off the boards as Collins led the floor with 18 points, while Nesland was not far behind with 15 of her own.
Up Next: High Point will hit the road as they head to Campbell University on Thursday, November 14. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
