HPU Falls to USC Upstate at Home

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Despite a game-high 17 points from Lauren Bevis, the High Point University women's basketball team fell short to USC Upstate 59-49 on Wednesday night to snap HPU's four-game winning streak.

Site: Qubein Center
Score: High Point 59, USC Upstate 49
Records: High Point (9-10, 4-2), USC Upstate (10-9, 5-1)

Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "Credit to State, they played for 40 minutes and they made plays down the stretch to extend the lead and put us in position where we had to foul. They are a disciplined team, they are good, they played together, and we made too many mistakes to beat them."

A Faith Price three-pointer kicked off the game for the Panthers, giving High Point an early 3-0 lead.

Despite seven turnovers and a 4-11 shooting performance from the court overall, HPU led at the end of the first quarter, 10-8.

"We talk too much about taking care of the ball and not turning it over to have that many turnovers," said Banbury.

The second quarter had Callie Scheier's name written all over it as she came out firing from beyond the arc. Scheier recorded eight points including two made three-pointers, to help HPU go on a 10-3 run to start the quarter.

USC Upstate would go on a scoring run themselves, 8-0, before Bevis closed out the second quarter with a three-pointer and give HPU the lead at the end of the half, 25-22.

A fantastic five-point, second quarter performance from Bevis carried into the second half as she earned herself an offensive rebound and jumper to start the third quarter.

HPU struggled to shoot the ball in the third quarter, shooting a poor 3-13 from the court overall and 1-7 shooting from the three-point line.

The Panthers poor third quarter shooting allowed USC Upstate to come back and bring the game within one point at the end of the quarter, 34-33.

The fourth quarter went back-and-forth the entire way until USC Upstate started to pull away near the end as they went on a 10-2 scoring run to pull their lead to eight points, 53-45.

HPU had its best shooting quarter as they went 5-12 from the court overall in the fourth, but USC Upstate pulled away with the victory 59-49.

"We gave up a big three, and then we stopped moving and stopped attacking. We did not really execute plays all that well down the stretch either and that hurt us," said Banbury.

The loss is HPU's second in conference play, and snaps a four-game winning streak.

Bevis had a game-high 17 points on 6-9 shooting from the court overall to go along with seven rebounds and a steal.

"We just have to continue to get better. We get to see them again at their place so we have to learn from this one and just move forward," said Banbury.
