HPU Comes Back to Earn the Win on Wednesday Night

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The High Point University women's basketball team came back to grind out a 64-50 win to grab another conference victory against UNC Asheville on Wednesday night.

Site: Kimmel Arena
Score: High Point 64, UNC Asheville 50
Records: High Point (7-9, 2-1), UNC Asheville (6-10, 0-3)

Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "We are fortunate to get a win on the road. I think we played well for about 25 minutes; we just have to eliminate the slow starts. I thought Nevaeh, Shakira, Callie, and Aaliyah gave us great minutes off the bench.

The first quarter started slow for HPU; Asheville dominated the first 10 minutes leaving HPU in a 16 point deficit at the end of the quarter.

HPU came out stronger in the second quarter as they managed to take charge of a 26-6 run.

Callie Scheier drained a floating three pointer to bring High Point to within six with a little over two minutes left in the half.

High Point headed to the locker room down 32-29.

Early in the third quarter, Scheier drained another one from beyond the arc to tie the game at 32.

A few possessions later, Lauren Bevis knocked down a three to give High Point its first lead of the game.

After taking the lead, HPU never looked back. The Panthers were up 48-35 with one quarter to play.

The Panthers bench helped contribute as they tallied 37 points tonight. Aaliyah Collins had 12 points, while Shakira Baskerville had 10 points and six rebounds. Scheier had eight points and three rebounds. Nevaeh Zavala came up strong with seven points and four rebounds.

Bevis led the team with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Up Next: High Point will head into its bye week but is back in action at home against Presbyterian on Wednesday, Jan 17. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
