CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Big South Conference announced the weekly awards for the week of September 11 through September 17, naming High Point University's
Jefferson Amaya and
Finn McRobb to the list. Amaya was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week while McRobb was named Defensive Player of the Week to sweep the Big South awards for the week.
In his freshman season, Amaya won the Big South Freshman of the Year honor after earning Freshman of the Week honors, making this his first Offensive Player of the Week award. This is McRobb's second award of the season and fourth all-time.Â
Amaya, the sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., had himself a week as HPU took on Elon and UNC Greensboro. In the draw against Elon Wednesday night, Amaya scored his first of the season off a penalty kick in the ninth minute. Elon's keeper guessed diving right but was fooled while Amaya booted it to the bottom left of the net. Saturday night, HPU took down the triad rival UNCG 3-1. Late in the game, Amaya took the corner kick finding McRobb through traffic, who headed it straight to the back of the net. Amaya was credited with the assist.Â
Â
McRobb, the senior from Scotland, scored two goals this past week in back-to-back games. In the game against Elon, McRobb scored one in the 17th minute off a throw in from
Alex Abril. The ball deflected off an Elon player, McRobb then controlled it out of the air and blasted it to the top of the net. Saturday night's game against UNCG, McRobb showed why he deserves his second Big South Defensive Player of the Week. In the 58th minute already up two, McRobb found the ball through traffic off a corner kick from Amaya and headed the ball right past the keeper. McRobb has only scored one goal each season and he now has three goals just five games into the 2023 slate.
