STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The High Point University women's golf team battled through cold and rainy weather in the final round Sunday — after a sunny 36 holes on the first day — to tie for third in its season-opening tournament at the Nittany Lion Invitational in State College, Pa. The Panthers finished above Richmond, Penn State, Akron, Eastern Kentucky, Navy and Central Michigan.

Head Coach Lyndsey Hunnell: "Really proud of the team's performance for their first event! We showed some nerves in the first round which is to be expected, but I loved watching all the adversity for our second round. For our final round today, we showed more resilience through the cold and wet conditions. I'm very proud of them and am looking forward to our next event in Vail, Colo."

Panther Placement:
5, Danielle Suh (+1)
T12, Julia McLaughlin (+7)
17, Anna Howerton (+9)
T18, Ella Perna (+10)
T30, Vynie Chen (+13)

Danielle Suh finished in the top five out of 57 participants. In her first round, Suh shot a 5-over 77 to start the tournament. Suh's best round was in the second, where she shot five birdies, three consecutively, carding a 4-under 68 for her lowest collegiate round. The next day, cold and rainy weather dampened conditions on the course, but the tough weather didn't stop the senior. Suh once again collected five birdies to finish the third round even and 1-over for the tournament, good for fifth place.

"Dani is proving to be a true leader her senior year," Hunnell said about Suh. "She is a new player this year and I'm excited to watch her continue to grow this season."

Julia McLaughlin tied for 12th in the tournament. McLaughlin shot a 4-over 76 in her first round with the Panthers. The transfer quickly settled in, shooting three birdies in the next round and four birdies in the third, carding her a 74 and 73, respectively.

Anna Howerton made her collegiate debut at Penn State. Like her teammates, Howerton scored in the upper-70s in the first round, carding a 76. The next time around, the freshman improved her score to an even 72, with three birdies. Howerton carded a 5-over 77 to land in 17th place.

Ella Perna stayed steady in the first round, shooting four birdies and recording a 72, her lowest score of the tournament. In the second round, Perna shot a 4-over 76 in the second round and wrapped up with a 78, good for a T18 finish.

Vynie Chen was last on High Point's roster. Chen recorded three birdies during the first two rounds, while scoring an eagle in the first and last round each. The senior shot rounds of 5-over 77 in the last two rounds and a 75 in the season-opening round, which placed her at T30.

All together, High Point carded an 888 total, which tied the team for third with Youngstown State University. The Panthers' best round was the second, where they scored 290 total. HPU scored 299 on both the first and third rounds.

Up Next: The Panthers fly to Vail, Colo., to participate in the Golfweek Red Sky Classic on Monday, Sept. 25.
