In the second inning, HPU took the lead when
Cole Singsank wore a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch before Josh Deslauries knocked in
Adam Stuart via a sac fly to go up 2-0.
The Spartans responded by cutting the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame, and then took the lead for good in the fourth en route to a 5-0 unanswered spurt.
HPU's bullpen allowed only one run through the final four innings after
Braden Halladay got the start and allowed three earned runs while striking out a pair. Viar tallied 3.1 innings pitched and dealt, allowing just one hit, and striking out four batters.
Sam Garcia closed out the game unscathed as the defense turned a double play and
Miggy Echazarreta made an impressive diving play at second base.
The Panthers' offense placed runners on base but were unable to convert them into runs as nine were left on base. In addition to Pallas' team-leading two hits,
Javon Fields, Stuart and
Blake Sutton each contributed hits while five players drew walks. Fields made plays offensively — with a hit and stolen base — while making a diving catch to get the Panthers out of the inning in the fourth as Viar relieved Halladay.
Up Next: The Panthers travel to Durham to face the Duke Blue Devils Wednesday at 6 p.m.
