"All credit goes to Richmond and its coaching staff," head coach
Jon Torpey said. "Quite simply, from the beginning to the end they were the better team in every facet of the game today. I'm looking forward to seeing the way our guys respond to this effort as we move on in our season."
VanOverbeke put HPU on the board within the first minute to start the game after
Collin Hoben won the opening faceoff.
The Spiders quickly countered with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead three minutes into the first quarter. The Panthers responded as Hoben won the next faceoff and
Brad Rider found
Jaxson Lamb for a goal with 10:45 left in the quarter. Both defenses settled in and neither team was able to score for the next five minutes of game clock. HPU ended the drought as VanOverbeke found
Nick Rizzo for his first goal of the night.
While the Panthers lead 3-2 with five minutes to play, Richmond countered in the final 90 seconds of the quarter to tie the game heading into the second period. The Spiders added another to open the second, but then both sides went scoreless again until
Colin Cooke scored off the assist from
Jack Sawyer with 3:55 left in the half.
Mayea scored his first goal of the day just over a minute later to take the 5-4 lead with two minutes to go, but Richmond answered with two goals to close out the half to hold the slight 6-5 edge at the break.
HPU once again scored on its first possession to open the half as Lamb added his second goal of the day on an assist from Rizzo. Tied at 6-6, the Spiders scored the next four goals to take a comfortable 10-6 lead with 4:41 left in the third. But Hoben won the next faceoff and took the ball down the field, finding Mayea for the open look to get HPU back within 10-7 in a six-second span.
Richmond countered with two more goals to close out the quarter, holding a 12-7 lead with 15 minutes to play. Mayea scored first the fourth period, hanging onto a pass from
Daniel Jones and finishing through a fall to the ground.
HPU responded again following a Richmond goal, as Hoben won the faceoff and VanOverbeke finished at the crease to stay within 13-9 with 10:39 to play. But the Panthers were not able to add another goal despite six shots on goal in the stretch.
Up Next: The Panthers travel to St. Bonaventure next weekend to continue Atlantic 10 play, looking for their second win after defeating Hobart last weekend at Vert Stadium. First faceoff is set for 4:00 p.m. in Olean, N.Y.
