High Point Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Gardner Webb

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point baseball welcomed Gardner-Webb to Williard Stadium for a Big South Conference weekend series. After a weather cancelation on Friday night, the Panthers and Runnin' Bulldogs matched up on Saturday afternoon in doubleheader action.

Site: Williard Stadium
Score: High Point 5, Gardner-Webb 2; High Point 4, Gardner-Webb 10
Records: High Point 11-24 (5-9), Gardner Webb 22-11 (10-4)

High Point was able to take the early game by a score of 5-2, behind a two-run home run from Cael Chatham, his ninth of the season, and a two run double from Charlie Klingler. Starting pitcher Gus Hughes picked up the win, which improved his record to 5-4 on the season. Dalton Williams came in during the last inning and picked up the save, registering his first of the year.

In the second game, HPU fell behind by two early. Trenton Pallas reached base in the bottom of the third inning via a walk, and proceeded to steal second base. A home run by Brett Ahalt tied up the score at two, which was his 10th this year.

Gardner Webb took the lead in the fourth inning by four runs. Sean Duffy entered the game at pitcher for starter Sam Garcia and got the quick out to end the inning.

Cole Singsank hit his second home run of the season to cut the deficit to three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Gardner-Webb came right back with a home run of their own in the sixth. Relief Pitcher Everett Vaughan entered the game to close out the inning. Gardner Webb stretched its lead to 10-3 in the top of the seventh inning. High Point added a run to bring the score to 10-4.

Singsank hit another home run to give High Point their fifth run, recording his first multi-home run game of his career. Unfortunately, the Panthers couldn't close the gap in the ninth, and Gardner-Webb took the second game of the series.

Up Next: The Panthers will face Gardner Webb for the final game of a three-game series on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
