GREENSBORO, N.C. — High Point University alum Tubby Smith will be recognized by the Greensboro Sports Council with the U.S. Basketball Writer's Association's Dean Smith Award, the USBWA announced Tuesday morning. The award symbolizes an individual in basketball who embodies the spirit and values of the late Coach Dean Smith.
The former HPU Head Coach will be accompanied by Bob McKillop, who coached at Davidson College for 33 years, in an award ceremony at the Tanger Center in Greensboro, N.C., on April 11 at 6 p.m.
In Smith's 31 years as a head coach, he achieved 26 winning seasons, compiling a career record of 642-369 with head coaching stints at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, Texas Tech, Memphis, and High Point. With Texas Tech's invitation to the 2016 NCAA Tournament, Smith became only the second coach in history to lead five different teams to the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to his national title with Kentucky, Smith won five SEC regular-season titles and five SEC tournament titles, plus his two MVC crowns. Smith was the AP National Coach of the Year, Naismith Coach of the Year and NABC Coach of the Year in 2003, a two-time MVC Coach of the Year, three- time SEC Coach of the Year and Big 12 Coach of the Year once. He also earned the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award and Sporting News National Coach of the Year honors in 2016.
The High Point alum lettered four years on the men's basketball team and earned all-conference status his senior year. Returning to his alma mater in 2018, Smith finished out his coaching career in 2022. The court inside the Qubein Center was dedicated to Smith for his time at HPU and named the Tubby & Donna Smith Court.
Other Dean Smith Award winners include John Thompson (Georgetown) in 2015, Tom Izzo (Michigan State) in 2016, Don Donoher (Dayton) in 2017, Fran Dunphy (Penn/Temple/La Salle) in 2018 and George Raveling (Washington State/Iowa/USC) in 2020.
