Coach Torpey on the win: "It was a great win against an NCAA-tournament team. We play that team pretty much every year and they are one of the hardest teams to prepare for because of all of the things they do right in the middle third of the field. We just did a great job scouting this week. We've played eight games in almost a month — more games than any team in Division I. The guys have done an excellent job recovering and executing when we get into the game".Â
Nick Rizzo opened up the scoring with a rip from the middle to put the Panthers up early. Just a few possessions later, Jack Vanoverbeke wrapped around the cage to net a goal top-corner, to begin his huge scoring night.Â
Â
After a response from the Colonials that knotted the game at 2, Nick Murphy lasered one in off an assist from Rizzo.Â
Â
With time winding down in the first quarter, Vanoverbeke rifled another goal in from "curry range" to put the Panthers up 4-3.Â
Â
Brayden Mayea began his scoring off a beautiful cross-cage pass from Vanoverbeke followed by another goal from Rizzo. The Panthers offensive execution was stellar in the first 30 minutes of play, out-shooting Robert Morris 23 to 12.Â
Â
The Panthers went into the break leading by two. Collin Hoben helped extend the Panther's possessions going 77% from the faceoff X in the first half.
Robert Morris scored first in the third, but Vanoverbeke dished out his fourth assist of the game to Michael Ippolito to keep it a two-goal deficit. Back-to-back goals from Vanoverbeke gave the Panther's their biggest lead of the afternoon after a collaborative defensive effort to regain possession.Â
Â
Following a penalty on the Colonials, Ippolito kept the pressure on with a man-up goal, making it 12-10 heading into the fourth quarter. Robert Morris tied the game at 13 with just under 12 minutes to play, but Parker Green did not let down with two consecutive saves on the door-step. Â
Â
Mayea and Vines both tallied goals late in the fourth, securing the Panther's sixth win of the season.Â
It was a total team effort as Vanoverbeke posted a career-high ten points in the win, off four goals and six assists. Mayea and Ippolito both netted hat tricks and Nick Rizzo added two goals and an assist. Murphy, Vines, Moran-Weekes, and Cooke also scored. Collin Hoben won 20 out of the 29 total faceoffs.Â
Torpey on Vano's career afternoon- "Vano has taken over that quarterback role that Asher played for us for five years and he has done a terrific job. He has great poise and he gets all of the guys involved".Â
Parker Green ended the game with 12 saves on the defensive end. Henry Mudlaff picked up five ground balls and one caused turnover and Zack Brenfleck caused two turnovers for the Panthers.Â
UP NEXT: The Panthers travel to Washington D.C. next Saturday, March 18th, to face No. 20 Georgetown at noon.
