The High Point University men's basketball team (14-16, 6-12) will begin Big South tournament play against No. 9 seed Charleston Southern on Wednesday (Mar. 1).  High Point will enter the tournament as an eight-seed. Tip-off is set for 6 pm.

Last Time Out
In the Panthers final game of the Big South regular season, HPU came up short 78-84 on Saturday afternoon to the Winthrop Eagles. The close battle witnessed 10 lead changes and seven tie ups in the 40 minutes of action. High Point was led by Zack Austin with a double-double, recording 17 points and 10 rebounds. Trailing behind Austin, Abdoulaye Thiam knocked down four threes for 14 points in his 37 minutes of play, coming one rebound shy from a double-double. Overall Winthrop's bench out shot HPU's bench by 13 points while the Panthers out rebounded the Eagles, 44-35.

High Point has the lead over Charleston Southern in matchups, with a 24-21 record. The teams have split in wins thus far leading into the third matchup for the 2023 season. Charleston Southern defeated High Point in Charleston, S.C. 106-69, while HPU returned the favor in February with an 81-73 win. 

Across the Bench
Charleston Southern has an overall record of 9-20 with a 5-13 record in conference play. The Buccaneers ended their regular season with an 85-59 win over Presbyterian on senior day. The team was led by five players in double figures, including a team-high 19 points from Tahlik Chavez. Claudell Harris Jr. complimented Chavez with 17 points himself after going 7-for-9 from the field. 
Overall, Charleston Southern is shooting 44.5% from the field, 34.7% from beyond the arc and 73.8% from the free throw line, averaging 72.9 points per game. The Buccaneers are led by Harris, Jr., averaging 17.5 points per game. On the boards Taje Kelly and Tyeree Bryan are both averaging just over five rebounds per game.

HPU Students 
If you are an HPU student, you can attend the game for free if you present your HPU Passport at the HPU table. Students have the option of traveling to Charlotte on their own or riding the HPU student bus, which will depart from Wanek Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. In addition to a free admission, a meal will be provided for each student riding the HPU bus.

Big South Leaders
Following the 2023 regular season, multiple Panthers ranked in the top 5 in Big South in multiple statistics. House finished third overall in scoring, averaging 17.0 points per game. Ahmard Harvey finished third overall in rebounding, totaling 220 rebounds, averaging 7.3 per game. Jaden House finished fifth in field goal percentage shooting 43.2% for the year. Thiam recorded 68 three-pointers for the year, coming in at fifth overall. Austin finished second overall in blocked shots with 64 total (five shy of his season-high 69 in 2021-22), averaging 2.1 per game.

Nation Leaders
Austin ranks 18^th in the nation in total blocks (64) and 21^st in the nation in blocked shots per game (2.1). House ranks 13^thin free throw attempts (130/202, 64%).

Career-Highs
Multiple Panthers reached career-highs this season in various categories. For points, House dropped 33 against Wofford, Thiam 24 against USC Upstate, Childress 20 at Campbell and Williams 14 against Charleston Southern. Austin and Bryant Randleman tied career-highs as Austin recorded 26 points at Radford and Randleman recorded eight assists at UNLV.

1000 Point Tracker 
House is 22 points away from reaching his 1000th career point with 978. In reaching this milestone, House would become the 12th Panther in program history. 
 
Block Party 
Austin became the 49th player in Big South history with 100 career blocked shots when he eclipsed the milestone on Jan.14. He ranks 48th in Big South with his 133 blocks (2nd overalal in program history) in his young career (62 games). He becomes the fourth Panther in High Point's Division I era to reach 100 career blocks.
