Head coach Chelsea Banbury: "I give Winthrop credit. It's tough being short-handed — Claire (Wyatt) and Nakyah (Terrell) have been a big part of what we've done this year and not having them today translated on the floor. We had some new people mixing in. But at the end of the day, we made enough plays to get the win and I'm proud of our girls for that.
"(Our seniors) have basically been here with me since the beginning. Jenson, Sky and Courtney were here my first year. Everything that we've done since I've been here, they've been a part of it. Losing them is going to be hard and we are going to miss them. They've done a lot for our program and a lot for me. I love them and they are going to do great things after this."
After the Panthers carried a 13-3 lead into the second quarter, the Eagles answered by outscoring HPU 21-7 in the next 10 minutes. High Point chipped away at the deficit slowly but surely as the Panthers got key triples from Anna Hager off the bench and Curran.
Over the final two minutes and 28 seconds of the third quarter, Curran had a steal, block, rebound, free throw and triple from a turnover to bring the Panthers within one with 15 minutes to play, 31-32.
That's when a fire lit under
Jenson Edwards. The senior used a 7-0 run of her own, including a nifty move to separate herself from the defender to swish away a wide-open triple, to put the Panthers ahead by five with under three minutes to play.
The Eagles didn't go away that easily as they responded with a 7-1 spurt to go ahead one. From there, a pair of Banbury timeouts and three Curran free throws was just enough to send the Panthers into the Hercules Tires Big South Women's Basketball Championship victorious.
