Head coach
Chelsea Banbury: "I'm disappointed with the outcome. I do give Asheville a lot of credit, I think they were the team with more energy and wanting to play today. They came out wanting to beat us and I think that showed. They sustained the energy for the entirety of the game. On our end I think we took too many breaks. We have to be better defensively, and we need more movement on offense, finishing at the rim, and knocking down some shots."
Claire Wyatt opened up the scoring for the Panthers with a three-pointer, assisted by
Nakyah Terrell.
Shakira Baskerville got on the board with a layup, pulling the Panthers back within 9-5 after an Asheville 7-0 run.
Jordan Edwards hit a three-pointer before knocking down a jump shot with 53 seconds left in the first quarter to cut the deficit back to three points. UNC Asheville closed out the first quarter with a three-point lead over the Panthers with a score of 13-10.
After a Terrell made free throw and another layup from Wyatt,
Jenson Edwards hit a jump shot through contact with 5:53 left in the half. With a made free throw, the Panthers were within 17-16 and looking to take the lead. Terrell followed with another made jumper to give High Point the one-point advantage with 4:23 left.
While Asheville countered with a layup,
Skyler Curran had two made layups in as many minutes, putting the Panthers three points ahead of the Bulldogs with 1:57 left in the second quarter. After another
Jordan Edwards layup, the Bulldogs closed the half on a 5-0 run to take the 27-24 lead into the break.
Following a Curran free throw to open the second half, the Bulldogs began a 6-0 run, which was followed by a layup made by Terrell, limiting the deficit back down to six points. Baskerville drove to the basket to make a layup that was assisted by
Anna Hager to pull HPU within 35-29 with 6:25 remaining. At the end of the third quarter, Terrell hit a three-pointer, making the score 46-36 going into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Terrell capitalized with back-to-back three-point plays, hitting a triple from deep before converting a three-point play with a jumper and a make from the free throw line. But the Bulldog defense forced an HPU turnover and made another stop while knocking down two jumpers to take a 14-point lead with 3:29 remaining.
With three seconds left on the clock
Jordan Edwards hit the final jumper of the game, finishing the night with nine points and four assists.
