High Point set the tone early in its 71-55 victory over Charleston Southern at Buccaneer Fieldhouse. The Panthers shot 55.1% from the field in the first half. The Panthers also placed a season-high five players in double figures.
Claire Wyatt led the Panthers with 14 points.
Charleston Southern would take an early 6-2 lead.
Skyler Curran hit the Panthers first three of the game to cut the deficit to 6-5. A Wyatt layup and five straight points from
Jenson Edwards would give the Panthers a 12-6 lead. From there, High Point went on a 13-3 run the close the quarter.
Shakira Baskerville contributed six points to the run, including a three to make it 25-11.
Baskerville ended the afternoon with 10 points on 4-6 shooting. The quarter would end on a Sha'mya Leigh buzzer beating three to make it 25-14. High Point shot 71.4% from the field in the first frame and 4-8 from downtown.
Leigh would hit a three to start a 5-0 Buccaneer run to start the second quarter. But Anna Hager would take over, leading a 12-3 run to end the quarter. Hager started the run with a layup off an offensive rebound. After a
Nakyah Terrell layup, Hager would score six consecutive points. A layup by Baskerville made it 37-19. A three from Carleigh Andrews closed the scoring in the first half, with the Panthers lead at 37-22.
Hager scored all of her 10 points in the first half, which is a new career high.
Wyatt opened the second half with a three pointer. After a Charleston Southern jumper, Curran made a layup and
Jordan Edwards hit two free throws. High Point went scoreless for around two minutes before Curran hit a three pointer. The Panthers endured another two-minute drought, ended by an
Amaria McNear free throw to make it 48-37. The Buccaneers cut the led to eight points with another three from Leigh. High Point close the quarter on a 6-0 run, with four more makes at the free throw line from McNear, making the score 54-40.
Leigh led all scorers in the contest with 20 points, hitting four threes.
The Panthers took a 19-point lead early in the fourth. Terrell made a layup and Wyatt made a three from the corner. Wyatt had seven fourth quarter points, giving her 14 for the game. High Point's largest lead was 23 with 3:01 remaining on a Curran layup. Curran ended with 10 points. Terrell was the fifth player in double figures with 13 points.
