CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Big South All-Conference Women's Soccer Award Winners have been announced as six Panthers were voted on by fellow Big South coaches and recognized Tuesday afternoon.
HPU had three players named to the Big South First Team as
Fain Buete,
Lindsey DeHaven and
Alex DePerno were honored, while
Tessa Carlin was tabbed to the Big South Second Team as well as named the Big South Newcomer of the Year.
Megan Garmey garnered Big South Honorable Mention accolades and was named to the Big South All-Academic Team; meanwhile,
Meg Roden was tabbed to the Big South All-Freshman Team.
The six winners are the most under second-year head coach
Aaron McGuiness as the Panthers are gearing up for the Big South Tournament, beginning Thursday, Nov. 1 in Matthews, N.C. at 7 p.m.
#9 Alex DePerno, Sr., Defender: Big South First Team
A consistent anchor on defense, DePerno is the true definition of a captain. The senior center back started every game (17) and is the only Panther to log every minute played (1,530). DePerno scored her first career goal in a 1-1 tie versus Radford en route to earning Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors, while she dished out an assist in a 3-2 win over Winthrop. A native of Apex, N.C., DePerno helped the Panthers to five clean sheets and earns her third Big South All-Conference honor with this being her second first team accolade.
#23 Fain Buete, Gr., Midfielder: Big South First Team
A captain in the midfield, Buete has been a driving force. The fifth-year player started every game played (17) and logged the most minutes (1,308) by a HPU midfielder. Buete ranks second with four goals while having two assists for a team-tying best 10 points. She netted her first career multi-score game against Presbyterian, while scoring game-winning goals at UMBC and versus the Blue Hose. A native of Wake Forest, N.C., Buete was the lone Panther to net a penalty kick this season — with one coming at UMBC and another against Charleston Southern — as she earns her first all-conference honor.
#27 Lindsey DeHaven, Jr., Midfielder: Big South First Team
Being as impactful as the next, DeHaven has been a steady contributor. The junior midfielder has started in every game played (16) for a total of 1,238 minutes. DeHaven scored a game-winning goal against Winthrop and didn't stop there as she recorded her first multi-assist career game versus the Eagles for a new single-game, career-high four points. A native of Sellersville, Pa., DeHaven also dished out an assist at NC State and Presbyterian en route to her second all-conference accolade and debut on the first team.
#36 Tessa Carlin, Gr., Forward: Big South Newcomer of the Year/Second Team
In her first season with the Panthers, Carlin made her impact known en route to being named the Big South Newcomer of the Year and Second-Team All-Conference member. The transfer from UTEP played in every game (17) while starting in 14 for 1,060 minutes logged. She scored a team-high five goals with a pair of multi-score games. She netted two against NC State in a 2-2 draw to claim her first Big South Offensive Player of the Week honors, while the Canadian's two goals — one being a game-winning score — against Charleston Southern propelled the Panthers to a Senior Day, 3-1, win. The forward also scored in a 1-1 draw at Gardner-Webb to cap a five-goal regular season and earn her third career All-Conference accolade and first at HPU.
#24 Megan Garmey, Jr., Defender: Big South Honorable Mention/All-Academic Team
A dependable one-on-one defender, Garmey can always be relied on. She has started in every game played (17) behind 1,250 minutes played. The junior registered two assists with the most impressive coming in the regular-season finale versus UNC Asheville, where she megged the keeper to earn her Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors. Garmey's first assist came at Gardner-Webb as she helped the Panthers to five clean sheets. Her efforts on and off the field were recognized this season as she paired her all-conference honorable mention with her all-academic team honors behind her 3.911 GPA in event management.
#30 Meg Roden, Fr., Midfielder: Big South All-Freshman Team
Coming to the United States to play soccer, Roden has been an impressive addition. She has played in 16 games with nine starts for 803 minutes logged in the midfield. The Australian freshman scored in the first and last games this season, banging one in versus Campbell and UNC Asheville for two goals for a spot on the all-freshman team.
